Tragedy Plus Time: Calgary Comedian Julie Robinson

Julie Robinson is a quick-witted comic from Calgary who thrives on the absurd, turning everyday situations into hilariously surreal moments on stage. Influenced by legends like Robin Williams and Molly Shannon, Julie’s comedy blends razor-sharp observations with unpredictable, off-the-wall punchlines that keep audiences on their toes. With performances at venues like The Laugh Shop and Yuk Yuk’s Calgary, she is quickly making a name for herself.

How would you describe your comedy style?

Absurdist/ Surrealist

Who are some of your influences?

Robin Williams, John Mulaney, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Molly Shannon, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Chelsea Handler, Amy Schumer, and Kate McKinnon

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

My favourite comedians growing up were Robin Williams and Molly Shannon. Robin, because his mind moved faster than most comics’ entire sets, and Molly, because she commits so hard to a bit, I’m pretty sure she’d throw herself into traffic for a laugh.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

My favourite comedian right now is Nikki Glaser because she commits so hard to the dumbest thing she says—she’ll double down, triple down, build a summer home on it. I respect that because I do the exact same thing. If I say something stupid, I’m taking it to the grave… or at least to the next five punchlines.

What is your pre-show ritual?

My pre-show ritual? I review my jokes, then I pay attention to what’s happening in the room, then I make inappropriate comments about it. I’ll use whatever jokes I have that match the energy, or if I’m feeling extra bold, I’ll just start guessing everyone’s zodiac sign. You’d be surprised how quickly a Leo will confirm they’re a Leo.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

My favourite place is the Laugh Shop because the audience there has such great energy—it’s like they came for a comedy show, but ended up in a group therapy session where the only cure is laughter.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My favourite bit is about how my skin has changed over 40. Under all this makeup, I really look like John Lithgow. And you know what? I’m proud of it! It’s relatable—because deep down, a lot of us women are just one primer away from a role in ‘3rd Rock from the Sun.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

I mostly find comedians on Netflix—because nothing says ‘cutting-edge stand-up’ like scrolling past 17 true crime docs and a baking show where someone just set a cake on fire.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Calgary weather’s got mood swings worse than a menopausal Mother Nature off her meds. One day, it’s +25°C, birds chirping, people in shorts—next day, BOOM—600°C, Ice Age reboot, and your car battery files for divorce. As for the people? This city used to be about just folks tryna live life. Now, it’s vegan yogis, protein-chugging gym bros, finance guys who talk like NPCs, and the rednecks who still think a truck is a personality.
