How would you describe your comedy style?
I’m a storyteller and almost all my material is based on my life.
Who are some of your influences?
Richard Pryor, Redd Fox, Dave Chappelle, and Daryl Lennox would make the list; however, the late great Bernie Mack had the greatest influence. I love how he comes to the stage fearless and says what we all think but are too afraid to say. His style encouraged me to switch my comedy to “telling yourself the truth about yourself” and do it unapologetically.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Eddie Murphy. I’m not sure how many times I watched Delirious with my buddies.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Dave Chappelle, who is a master storyteller
What is your pre-show ritual?
I like to arrive at the venue early, sit in the room, and listen to what people are talking about before the show and get the vibe of the place. Sometimes I will add material to my set based on what I’m hearing around me.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
I just did a UK comedy tour with two other comics, and we did a show at the Backyard Comedy Club in London. The audience response was amazing, and knowing that I was standing on the same stage that Dave Chappelle had performed on was incredible.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I tell a lot of stories about my kids and being a father. One of my favourites is about the time I was rushing to get my kids to their extracurricular activities, and I was pulled over for speeding by the police with my then 5-year-old son in the backseat. When the officer asked me why I was speeding in a school zone, before I could answer him, my son piped up, “Because we didn’t see you hiding there. You must be good at hide and go seek; that’s a great hiding spot”. I wish that story wasn’t true.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
I like to pop into comedy clubs for open mic nights when I’m travelling and of course, I will occasionally troll YouTube and TikTok.
Tell us a joke about your city.
The first time I came to Calgary and encountered the western cowboy feel of the place, I thought to myself, do these people know that this is not Texas?
