Charitable Choices: Allan Reid of Canadian Army Veterans Support Services

Since 2018, Allan Reid and his team at Canadian Army Veterans Support Services (CAVSS) have been working to provide essential aid to veterans and first responders who feel left behind. The organization was founded in response to the closure of Calgary’s only veterans’ food bank, a decision Reid calls “silly,” and has since expanded its reach across the country. With a growing client base, CAVSS continues to offer support, though Reid stresses that more funding and year-round public support are needed.

Canadian Army Veterans Support Services

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

Our charity, Canadian Army Veterans Support Services (CAVSS), provides essential support to veterans and first responders. We work to ensure that those who have served their country and communities receive the help they need to transition successfully into civilian life.

What problem does your organization aim to solve?

We focus on assisting veterans and first responders who feel left out or pushed aside, particularly those struggling to adjust to civilian life. Many of them face isolation, financial hardship, or difficulty accessing the resources they need.

When did you start or join the organization?

We founded CAVSS in 2018.

What inspired you to get involved?

The closure of Calgary’s only veterans’ food bank was a turning point for me. It was a terrible decision that left many in need without a critical resource. I knew something had to be done to support these individuals.

What was the situation like when you started?

There was a lot of division and bad blood among different support groups, and unfortunately, that conflict continues. More importantly, the need for assistance has remained constant, but very few organizations were stepping up to provide help.

How has the organization changed since its inception?

Every year, our client base grows, and we have grown with it. We have expanded our support services beyond Calgary, working to create a nationwide network of assistance for veterans and first responders in need.

What more needs to be done?

We need increased funding and greater respect from all levels of government. More importantly, we need ongoing public support—not just recognition one day a year. These individuals have sacrificed so much, and they deserve consistent assistance.

How can our readers help?

You can help by donating money, food, or your time. Every contribution makes a difference in the lives of those who have served.

Do you have any upcoming events?

Yes! We host events throughout the year. You can stay updated by visiting our website.

Where can people follow your organization?

You can find us online at www.CAVSS.ca.
